Mahatma Gandhi was a political activist and Indian religious leader who became internationally known for fighting for India's independence in the first half of the 20th century. It was through his work across the country that India achieved its independence from British colonizers in 1947.
Gandhi therefore became known as a proponent of non-violence, believing that the best way to fight social injustice was through non-violent methods. That is, one of these methods was civil disobedience, which he used on several occasions against the British. He was a victim of the growing rivalry between Hindus and Muslims in India, being assassinated in 1948.
